Media Release: Free Cybercrime Event for Deniliquin Businesses

Media Release

15 May 2023

Local businesses are increasingly vulnerable to cybercrime, with the average cost of a business cyber-attack totaling $276,323. Up to a third of all businesses have experienced cybercrime, with 60 percent of attacks targeting small and medium businesses.

Regional Development Australia Murray, Deniliquin Business Chamber and nbn Local are holding a FREE Cybersecurity event for local businesses, organisations and not-for-profits on Wednesday 31 May.

Led by digital experts from the Australian Government Home Affairs Cyber Security Outreach team and nbn Local, the ‘Cyber Security: Get ahead of the game’ event will be a chance to hear about cyber criminal’s methods, traps, and trends and how to manage your cybersecurity risks and responsibilities.

Regional Development Australia Murray (RDA Murray) CEO Edwina Hayes said the event was designed to help local businesses and organisations understand the importance of cyber security and how to best protect themselves from an attack.

“As the number of internet and mobile phone users grows, so do cybercrimes. Cyber-attacks are becoming increasingly common and globally cybercrime is one of the fastest growing threats to people, businesses, and organisations,” Mrs Hayes said.

“Cybercrime and data breaches can have dire consequences for any organisation. This event aims to educate local people about simple and effective cybersecurity improvements to detect, prevent, and deal with attacks and the risks associated with ignoring cybersecurity.”

The evening will also include a regionally relevant economic development update from RDA Murray, an update from nbn regional manager Andrew Cottrill on regional broadband investment and upgrades, as well as a beautiful, locally curated dinner from the Long Table Café.

The ‘Cyber Security: Get ahead of the game’ event will be from 5pm-8.30pm Wednesday 31 May 2023 at The Depot Historic Collection, 158 Hardinge Street Deniliquin. Canapes and dinner will be provided.
