Four large-scale renewable energy projects have been granted access to new transmission infrastructure in the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), marking a key step in NSW’s clean energy transition.
EnergyCo has awarded access rights to a group of wind, solar, and battery developments with a combined generation capacity of 3.56 gigawatts—enough to power approximately 1.6 million homes annually.
The successful projects are:
- Origin Energy’s Yanco Delta Wind Farm
- Spark Renewables’ Dinawan Energy Hub
- Someva’s Pottinger Energy Park
- BayWA’s Bullawah Wind Farm
The access rights were granted following a competitive tender process conducted by AEMO Services Limited. The high level of interest among developers reflects the South West REZ’s strong renewable energy potential.
Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) are designated areas where generation, storage, and transmission infrastructure are developed in coordination. The aim is to deliver reliable and affordable electricity while maximising local benefits.
The South West REZ is expected to play a key role as NSW transitions away from coal-fired power generation, with three of the state’s remaining coal plants scheduled to retire over the next decade.
The projects will also contribute access fees, which will help fund community benefit programs informed by local priorities. These programs aim to deliver long-term social and economic outcomes for communities in the region.
EnergyCo has stated that granting access rights provides greater certainty about which projects will proceed in the coming years, enabling more coordinated planning for local communities, investors, and the energy sector.
RDA Murray will continue to keep the community informed as these projects progress. Energy security is vital to the long-term sustainability and prosperity of our region, and we look forward to continuing our role as a regional connector and advocate in partnership with government and industry.
